Anchorage, AK, United States (AHN) – A military cargo aircraft carrying several people crashed in Alaska Wednesday evening while on a training mission.
The U.S. Air Force said the condition of the four crew members is unknown. It did not release the identities of the crew and said a board of officers will investigate the crash.
The C-17 Globemaster was on a training mission when the accident took place around 6:14 p.m. local time. The plane is assigned to the 3rd Wing at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.
Local reports said the service members were practicing for this weekend’s Arctic Thunder, an air show and the largest two-day event in Alaska.
The C-17 is a 53-meter long aircraft from Boeing that has four engines and is capable of carrying nearly 80 tons of payload and 265 tons of cargo. It is designed to airdrop more than 100 paratroopers and equipment.
