Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada (AHN) – The federal government of Canada allocated $ 3 million for First Nations University of Canada students. The funds aim to help aboriginal students finish the academic year, which ends in August.

Indian Affairs Minister Church Strahl explained the funds seek to ensure the aboriginal students are prepared to enter the workforce and enjoy the fruit of Canada’s economic prosperity.

For the funds to be released, a qualified post-secondary educational institution of good standing must submit a proposal under the Indian Studies Support Program. Approval of the proposal is conditioned on it meeting the needs of First Nations students.

To qualify for the funding, the proposal’s eligible expenses must support the development and delivery of college and university level courses for aboriginal students, and those that focus on research and development of First Nations education. Core funding expenses, debt payments and severance pay are not eligible expenses.

The Saskatchewan-based FNU was in danger of closing in 2009 due to lack of funds, Ottawa had to bail out the educational institution by restoring $5.2 million in funding. The fund shortage was caused by Ottawa and Regina’s decision to stop funding the university’s $12 million budget due to dubious spending practices by the school administration.

The funds were restored on the condition that the University of Regina provide oversight to FNU finances for the next three years.
