Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) - Center Mike Modano, set to become a free agent July 1 after 20 seasons in Dallas, told a major media outlet Monday he doesn't believe the Stars are going to re-sign him.
"The more and more I look at the situation here, I come to believe I'm not in the scheme of things here," Modano told ESPNDallas.com. "If I had to play, I may have to look at going elsewhere."
Modano, 40, joined the Minnesota North Stars as the first overall draft pick in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft at the age of 18. He followed the team when it moved to Dallas in 1993 and won the Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1999.
The Michigan native plans to return either way and add to his 557 career goals and 802 assists in 1459 games.
General manager Joe Niewendyk insists there has been an open dialogue with Modano since the end of the Stars season.
Dallas failed to make the playoffs for the second year in a row after advancing to the conference finals in 2008.
