New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The National Football League will hang a poster in every team’s locker room detailing the negative effects of concussions, prompted after several years of study and research proved a connection with brain diseases.
Academics nationwide explored the negative effects of concussions by profiling past and present players, while also conducting studies on deceased players’ brain damage.
What resulted was a link to depression and early on-set dementia, among other brain-related conditions.
The NFL, which had discounted the dangerous link in the past, was forced to address the issue as retired players’ wives spoke out before Congress.
The poster warns that repeated concussions can lead to dementia and depression, and that concussions “can change your life and your family’s life forever.” It tells players they should look out for symptoms like headaches, confusion, memory problems and increase of emotions.
The NFL goes on to remind players that young “athletes are watching” in another draft of the poster, which will be distributed along with a pamphlet.
“(The poster) is intended to present the most current and objective medical information on concussions and will be distributed to the players and clubs in the near future,” said league spokesman Greg Aiello to the New York Times.
Players have expressed their appreciation for the reminder the poster provides. They also hope it spurns a change in how retired veterans with cognitive decline are handled by the disability plan operated jointly by the league and the players union.
The poster is part of a program that has already adopted stricter rules regarding when players can return from head injuries, when they can practice and who is permitted to clear the player.
