Colorado Springs, CO, United States (AHN) – The first phase in building Team USA-Basketball has been completed, with organization announcing Wednesday the 15 finalists for its 2010 USA World Championship team.
Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant is one of three Thunder players considered on the list that is ladened with guards but only has Brook Lopez and Tyson Chandler as its centers.
Almost similar to the team built for the 2008 Olympics, the current roster is deep in athleticism but lacks size.
Tyreke Evans, O.J. Mayo, JaVale McGee and Gerald Wallace were cut from the 19 names on the list that finished camp in Las Vegas last week.
Durant, the 2010 scoring champ, is listed at guard position, but will play at the 3 and 4 spots for Team USA. He will be complimented on the wings by Rudy Gay, Danny Granger and Andre Iguodala.
Listed in the backcourt are: Chauncey Billups, Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry and Eric Gordon.
Playing at the big forward positions are Jeff Green, Kevin Love and Lamar Odom.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski reportedly indicated that in the event Lopez, who has dealt with mononucleosis, causing him to loss about 20 pounds, is unable to make the final cut, Odom could emerge as backup center.
The 15 players are set to report Aug. 9 for the start of training camp.
The current roster will be trimmed down to 12 by Aug. 26.
Turkey will host the 2010 edition of the FIBA World Championship, which will be held from Aug. 28 through Sept. 12.
