Denver, CO, United States (AHN) – Held in high esteem for his work ethic in offseason workouts and minicamp, Broncos rookie quarterback Tim Tebow was a no-show Wednesday, the first day of Denver’s preseason training camp.
Arguably the most successful player in the history of college football, Tebow’s first NFL training camp has been put on hold for at least 24 more hours, as the 24th overall draft pick and the Broncos are locked down in contract negotiations.
According to ESPN, progress has been made and a deal could be in the works by as early as Thursday.
Tebow, who was hoping to be signed by the beginning of training camp, has been staying in the Denver area in anticipation of a deal being made.
The former Heisman Trophy winner’s agent, Jim Sexton is eying a bigger deal than what Dez Bryant, the No. 25 overall pick, received when Oklahoma State standout became the first first-round draft pick to sign a contract.
Bryant inked a four-year deal on July 23. The deal is worth a reported $11.8 million with $8.3 million guaranteed.
Citing his client being an elite quarterback, Sexton is looking for a bigger guaranteed payday for Tebow, who was the second quarterback taken in this years draft. He was selected behind No. 1 pick Sam Bradford of Oklahoma.
While Tebow plays the waiting game, his fellow signal callers in Denver are already in camp.
Former Cleveland Brown starter Brady Quinn and last year’s Broncos starter Kyle Orton was in camp on opening day and working with the rookies.
It is anticipated Tebow will have a shot to compete with the two veterans for the starting job, according to second-year, head coach Josh McDaniels, who made a phone call to the rookie quarterback Wednesday.
Last month, McDaniels, who is coming off an 8-8 season where the Broncos lost their final four games to fall out of playoff contention, said yes when asked by the Denver Post’s Woody Paige if Tebow could be the starter when the season begins in September.
However that was before Tebow’s delayed arrival at training camp. The longer the contract negotiations take, the more a three-player competition turns into a two-player race for the starting quarterback job.
