Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – A White House task force formed to fight the growing problem of childhood obesity released recommendations to get American kids more fit.
President Barack Obama’s wife Michelle announced the recommendations during a press conference in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. The first lady made curbing childhood obesity rates one of her main goals while her husband is in office.
The recommendations are the result of input from 12 federal agencies and 2,500 submissions from parents, teachers, doctors and others, the White House said in press release.
The guidelines include encouraging breast feeding, reducing the amount of time children watch television, use the computer and play video games and making sure kids get more exercise.
But the recommendations also include more regulatory action, including mandating nutritional data be included on menus and limiting the kinds of advertising of foods marketed toward children.
The task force also recommended mandating food provided in school be more nutritious, making healthier foods less expensive and “eliminating” what the White House statement refers to as “food deserts.”
